At the Blending Table
A few practical answers to keep your next experiment small, clear and enjoyable.
What is a sensible first blending ratio?
For a tea-led or rooibos-led trial, 80% foundation, 15% support and 5% accent is a useful starting sketch by weight. Potent ingredients may need much less. This is a flavour framework, not a safety limit.
Can I measure everything with teaspoons?
You can make a casual cup that way, but fluffy petals and dense leaves have different weights per spoon. A suitable scale gives a more repeatable recipe.
Can I add fresh citrus peel to a stored dry blend?
Do not mix moist fresh peel into a dry blend for storage. Use appropriate food-grade dried peel, or add freshly prepared zest to a cup you will brew promptly.
Are all herbal infusions caffeine-free?
No. Ingredients such as yerba mate and guayusa contain caffeine, and mixtures may include tea. Check every ingredient. Decaffeinated tea may retain some caffeine.
Why does my blend taste bitter or drying?
Check water temperature, steeping time and mixture-to-water ratio first. Citrus pith or an assertive ingredient may also contribute. Change one variable at a time.
Can I use flowers from a florist or my garden?
Do not use florist or craft flowers. Garden ingredients require reliable identification of the edible species and plant part, plus suitable growing and handling conditions. Identified food-grade products are a clearer starting point.
How long should a homemade dry blend keep?
There is no universal shelf life. Follow ingredient guidance, keep the blend dry and protected, and make small batches. Discard damp, mouldy or contaminated material.
Is a natural ingredient suitable for everyone?
No. Allergies, medicines, pregnancy, breastfeeding, age and health conditions can affect suitability. Ask a clinician or pharmacist about ingredient-specific concerns.
Can one blend combine green tea and hard spices?
It can, but extraction needs may conflict. Use restrained proportions and compatible preparations, or prepare ingredients separately according to suitable guidance before combining the liquids.
